MoQ for the Curious

A guide to Media over QUIC

MoQ for the Curious

On this page

MoQ for the Curious explains how Media over QUIC delivers live content: how publishers name it, relays distribute it, and players keep it useful when the network slows.

We’ll introduce the networking and media concepts as we need them. To see how they fit together, we’ll follow an online lecture from the moment a student joins to the moment they hear the lecturer.

This book is inspired by WebRTC for the Curious and its approach to explaining how the pieces of a real-time communication system fit together.

Where to begin

Start with the first chapter for an introduction and a comparison with WebRTC. Continue in order to follow the lecture through networking, subscriptions, relays, and playback. If you already know the basics, use Your First MoQ System to find demos and libraries to start with. The glossary explains unfamiliar terms along the way.

A protocol still taking shape

This edition uses MOQT draft-21, published September 8, 2026, as its IETF baseline. Implementation examples are labeled separately from protocol requirements.

The draft is useful reading alongside the book. Start with its motivation section, then follow the content model and protocol behavior before looking up individual message fields.
